Fantasy-Only Concept & Costuming Policy

1. Fantasy Worlds Only
- All characters must come from a fantasy setting, not real-world history. You may draw inspiration from any fantasy game, LARP, novel, or your own creation but avoid using real-world names for people, places, religions, or cultures.
✔️ Allowed:
- "Priestess of Heliod from the cliffs of Theros"
- "Viking raider from the frozen isles of Skarnheim"
- "Samurai from the Amber Empire of Kawa-no-Orochi"
❌ Not Allowed:
- "Greek Priestess of Apollo"
- "Viking Berserker from Norway"
- "Samurai from the Edo Period"
2. Why: Safety & Immersion
- Real-world history brings real-world trauma into play (racism, colonialism, sexism, etc.), even unintentionally. Using fantasy versions helps protect players from accidental harm and misunderstanding.
- Lean into archetypes, not actual history. A crusader from Emberlight is great; a crusader from medieval Europe is not.
3. Cultural Inspiration Is Fine—But Reimagine
- Draw from aesthetics, colors, textures, and motifs.
- Change names, locations, symbols, and context to make it clearly fantasy.
- Add original details like new banners, gods, or dialects to fully place your character in the game world.
4. Restricted Costume Elements
Avoid the following:
- Anything gear or clothing from the 1700s or later.
- Real-world religious regalia (prayer beads, ceremonial robes, miters, etc.)
- Sacred symbols or clan emblems from living traditions
- Historical military insignia, funerary wear, or garments with active cultural significance
- Specific insignia from real-world history (e.g., samurai heraldry, Roman legion marks)
✔️ Good:
- Linen wrap robe with fantasy accessories or Airbender from Avatar TLA
❌ Avoid:
- Direct imitation of Tibetan monk robes or real Shinto shrine emblems
The goal: Evoke, don’t replicate.
5. Tattoos & Personal Identity
- You are *not* required to cover real-world tattoos or personal cultural markers.
- This policy applies only to costumes and characters you create for play.
- We encourage you to express your heritage thoughtfully, through a fantasy lens.
6. Conduct & Accountability
- Caricatured behavior, offensive accents, or racial mimicry are strictly prohibited.
- If concerns arise, expect respectful conversations and opportunities to adjust. Failure to adjust after a conversation with Staff may result in discipline.
- Approach these talks with openness. Debate is not the goal; growth and community care are.
7. Reporting & Support
- If you feel uncomfortable raising a concern directly, please speak with a Referee or visit the Ops desk. Our goal is community care, not punishment.
8. Applying the Rule: Simple Steps
If you already have a historical character:- Change real-world names of people, places, and deities.
- Shift your setting to a clear fantasy location.
- Keep your archetype and visual elements but reimagine their world.
Example
- ❌ Before: Titus, Centurion of Rome, sworn to Mars
- ✔️ After: Titus of Avenna, war-leader sworn to the Crimson Flame
